Hair loss after pregnancy is not uncommon and while it may be a cause of additional stress for new mothers, it is important to note that this type of female hair loss is treatable. Postpartum hair loss is normally identified when a women notices excessive amounts of hair loss while showering or shampooing.

One of the most well known symptoms of pregnancy is the change in hormones that every women experiences. This, coupled with the trauma to the body of pregnancy itself, is a leading cause of womens hair loss. The increase in hormones causes the hair follicles to function improperly, leading to hair loss.

Fortunately, hormonal spikes due to pregnancy are not a permanent cause of female hair loss. Most women do not need to seek female hair loss treatment. A woman’s hair growth will generally return to normal after her hormone levels rebalance. In the meantime, gentle hair brushing techniques should be used to avoid causing additional hair loss.

Women who have thin hair before pregnancy may be especially concerned about postpartum hair loss and might want to take preventative action to avoid the condition. The use of gentle brushing techniques accompanied by very gentle hair care products are some of the best ways to avoid excess hair loss.

Pregnant women and those who have just given birth should be especially careful to avoid the chemicals involved in hair dying or perming. Hair loss after pregnancy is guaranteed to become worse if the hair is exposed to these damaging ingredients.

The chemicals in dyes and perms are a major concern for other reasons as well. Not only will the mother lose her hair, but there is no way to determine whether or not the chemicals contained in hair dye will have an adverse affect on the health of the baby. It is best to avoid these products at all costs.

You are what you eat and pregnant women are eating for two. Take special care when choosing the foods you eat during pregnancy as the proper food choices will help to promote healthy skin and hair. The healthy food choices you made during pregnancy should continue to apply for years after.

As always, seek the advice of your physician if you are concerned about your postpartum hair loss or if you feel the amount of hair you are losing is unreasonable. He or she may be able to recommend alternative treatment methods or supplements designed to control your symptoms and provide relief.
