Sweating is our body’s natural response to certain situations. When our body heats up as a result of physical exertion or ambient conditions, we sweat to cool it. When rubbing occurs due to movement between different parts of our body, we sweat to provide lubrication. We also sweat to excrete certain substance in our system to regulate fluid balance or simple to discharge waste. Sweating is thus a purposeful and necessary function.

When our sweating function goes awry, it’s either we are sweating too much or not enough. It is a medical condition and they are termed Hyperhidrosis and Anhidrosis respectively. Hyperhidrosis is the more common of the two although Anhidrosis is more serious. It is estimated that around 2 % of people have a problem with Excessive Sweat. They typically occur in the underarms (Axillary), hands (Palmar), feet (Plantar) and face (Facial).

Hyperhidrosis can be a condition on its own cause and existence or as a result of other ailments. The former is known as Primary Hyperhidrosis and is typically restricted to only specific areas of the body. The latter is known as Secondary Hyperhydrosis and is inherently tied to an underlying medical problem such as diabetes, thyroid, malignancy or other medical disorders. It also generally affects the entire body.

Primary Hyperhidrosis is rarely life-threatening but often tormenting especially when it’s accompanied by other unpleasant disorders like odor, dandruff and acne. It can also take its toll emotionally and psychologically over time. Complications and more serious secondary problems than excessive sweat itself have been known to develop as a result of it. It is hence necessary take measures to stop Excessive Sweat as it won’t be cure on its own.

There are various proven ways to stop excessive sweat. It ranges from over the counter antiperspirants to surgery. Other ways to combat excessive sweat in between these two extreme measures include prescription topical creams, injections and oral medication. The choice of treatment to curb excessive sweat depends largely on the severity of the problem, along with consideration of costs, side-effects, risk and permanency of relief or cure. As far as possible, it should be conservative as over-treatment can be as damaging as lack of it.

With excessive sweat type of medical ailments, there is actually wisdom in exploring home treatment on account of convenience, cost and privacy. That’s not to say that it can be foolhardy.
