It is only been in the last few years that the medical community has begun to recognize binge eating as an eating disorder. Although many people are familiar with bulimia, which is recognized when a person binge eats and then purges their system afterwards. With eating disorders like binge eating the pattern of actually trying to get rid of what they have eaten is completely removed from the equation and so makes it a completely different condition altogether.
For this reason, alone many people do not actually consider this to be an actual eating disorder. Rather what they see it as is a person’s own choice of what they do with the food they eat and their bodies.
Yet even though when bingeing and person is not either starving themselves or placing their health under serious risk through the use of laxatives or from vomiting. This particular eating disorder can still cause serious repercussions where a person’s health is concerned.
Anyone who suffers from bingeing they will eat large amounts of food and in the same way with bulimia and anorexia places strain on their body, especially to their heart. In fact in many cases a person who binge eats will be more prone to gaining weight rather than actually losing it. But in the majority of cases they will all be extremely unhealthy.
The biggest problem faced by those that do binge eat is that they rarely recognize that they are suffering from this problem. It does not matter whether they are secretly eating at night or are consuming large amounts of food at regular intervals, they themselves feel that they are in control of the situation at all times.
With most eating disorders the biggest challenge that sufferers of these will have to face is actually admitting to themselves that they have a problem in the first place. They try to ignore the problem because they do not want to admit that they do not have any control over their life.
Yes we all over eat at some time in our lives, but this is completely different from binge eating. Where as eating something you enjoy a little more than usual at Christmas or when on holiday is considered normal. For a binge eater they will often have little or no control over just how much food they eat, over what they eat or when they eat it.
Although health problems such as weight gain are relatively minor when it comes to binge eating. It is the psychological problems, which are the more worrying side effect associated with this particular eating disorder. In fact in many cases those that binge eat will often dismiss the problem as nothing more than a habit they have got into or it part of whom they are and something they have chosen for themselves.
