Many people have a mindset that plastic surgery is for the vain. These same people are surprised to learn there are many different types of plastic surgery. Reconstructive and cosmetic are the two general breakdowns.

Think you know what plastic surgery is? Well, reconstructive surgery is probably not it. This type of surgery is designed not to improve the body, but to return it to its natural shape and look if possible. Doing skin grafts on a burn victim would be an example.

Reconstructive plastic surgery is actually very common. It is often done after the repair of serious trauma to hide scars. It can also be used during the reattachment of lost appendages and even limbs in certain situations.

The most popular forms of reconstructive surgery include sex reassignment; breast reconstruction; microsurgery; cleft lip; cleft palate and contracture surgery. If you are seeking a remedy based upon anything mentioned above, you are a good candidate for reconstructive surgery.

In contrast, we have the better known elective plastic surgery. This is a procedure undertaken by a person voluntarily to improve some aspect of their appearance the find lacking. Getting a crooked nose straightened is a good example.

The female gender makes up the majority of elective patients, but men are joining in ever growing numbers. Women tend to go for face, breast and fat removal procedures while men go for tummy tucks, hair transplant and facial work as well.

In order to find out whether or not you can qualify for cosmetic surgery, you must visit with a licensed surgeon in order to go through a consultation. This surgeon will be able to tell you if your goals are realistic or not. Most will use before and after software to give you an estimate of the change.

What about price? Well, there is good and bad news. If it is a reconstructive procedure, insurance should cover it. If you are doing elective surgery, you are on your own. Make sure to get a written estimate of all costs so you know what is involved if it is elective

If you are getting surgery that will not be covered by health insurance, it is easy to shop for the lowest price. This is a huge mistake. We are talking about surgery on your body, not new shoes. Go with a certified plastic surgeon who comes with strong recommendations.

Whether we are talking about reconstructive or cosmetic procedures, plastic surgery is one are of medicine where major advancements have been made. Take the time to educate yourself on the possibilities and then speak with a surgeon regarding your options.
