When a person is suffering from acid reflux, the symptoms sometimes appears to be due to a cold or flu. People start coughing, they might have a sore throat and sometimes they can even lose their voice completely. A sore throat is one symptom of reflux that occurs because the stomach acid leaves the stomach and moves into the lungs and/or the esophagus. This acid can mix with saliva, leading to a sore throat and possibly the loss of the person’s voice.
Another link between acid reflux and voice disorders is a shortness of breath due to the acid. This can limit the air necessary to speak, and lead to strained vocal chords. Over time they can become damaged, affecting the voice. It can either become thin and reedy or in some cases it will deepen.
